The Biden administration has issued a call to states to enhance security measures for water and wastewater systems amid growing concerns over cyber threats. The White House, along with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has alerted all US governors about the increasing risk of "disabling cyberattacks" targeting utilities nationwide. In a recent letter, the administration highlighted the persistent threat posed by hackers associated with the governments of Iran and China. These attacks, if successful, could disrupt access to clean drinking water and impose significant costs on affected communities. To address these challenges, secretaries from the Environmental, Health, and Homeland Security departments have met recently. The purpose of this gathering was to discuss strategies to safeguard critical water infrastructure from cyber attacks. Additionally, the EPA is establishing a Water Sector Cybersecurity Task Force to identify vulnerabilities and implement recommendations emerging from the upcoming meeting.
